Saul Bass was born in New York City in 1920 and is a widely acclaimed graphic designer with a career spanning over 40 years. Among his most famous works are the title sequences for such classic films as The Man with the Golden Arm(1955), North by Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960). Saul bass was a graphic designer and film maker and was best know for his design of film posters and title sequences. During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, and Martin Scorsese. Bass also designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the original AT&T “bell” logo in 1969, as well as their later “globe” logo in 1983. He also designed Continental Airlines’ 1968 “jetstream” logo and United Airlines’ 1974 “tulip” logo which have become some of the most recognised logos of the era. In 1955, Elaine Makatura came to work with Saul Bass and after the opening title sequence to spartacus in 1960, which Elaine directed and produced, the two were married. Much of Saul Bass’s work thereafter was made in close collaboration with Elaine. From the mid-60s to the late 1980s, Saul and Elaine moved away from main titles to focus on filmmaking and their children.

The man with the golden arm is a 1955 American drama film with elements of film noir, based on the book of the same same name by Nelson Algren, which tells the story of a drug addict who gets clean while in prison, but struggles to stay that way in the outside world. Saul bass was the man behind the opening title sequence in its time his opening title sequence was considered a revolution in the film making industry. This was because because the OTS used a simple set up where there are white lines that come up along with the cast from the top of the screen.
