Sub Genre Research
The Zombie sub genre has been around for a long time compared to other subgenre. Zombies were not the same as they was today.Zombies back then was a product of voodoo and it was very easy to see in the movies. In films such as white zombie and the revenge of the zombies lifeless bodies were removed from the graves and made slaves. White Zombies was released in 1930's and was one of first zombie subgenre. This film was created completely through black and white but uses close up shots to make the film seem scary. The film was about a girl named Madeline who drank a potion which allowed her to control and posses. In 1968 was the birth of the modern zombie where a directer caller George A. Romero made a small budget black and white film called night of the living dead and the gore effect became a staple of the genre.

The 1970s was a decade of a lot of growing pains for the zombie genre as film makers didn't know how to create a successful movie. There was a few good attempts such as children shouldn't play with dead things and garden of the dead. By the end of the 1970s and in to the 1980s zombie films started to get noticed as they were getting better. Dawn of the dead was when the film maskers knew where they were going.

In the 1990s the zombie film makers went crazy filling all of the zombie films with the most violence as possible. braindead was classed the goriest movie ever and the zombies shown that as there was blood and guts everywhere and they had black eyes and ripped flesh. these were like the teenage years for the zombie makers where a lot of blood and gore but there was also a lot of mistakes when it comes to editing.
28 Days Later was created in 2002. This film was not really remember as the film did not really reach some of there target audience. The film cover relates to the zombie subgenre as it uses red to represent danger and warning to stay away. We may use this in our zombie subgenre as red is a recurring colour that will appear throughout the subgenre. |
Zombieland is a new film which was released in 2009. It was successful as it related to the ideas of what are target audience wants. It was more of comedy which is currently related to a lot of horror movies. This was also well advertised as some of the celebrities that were well know were associated with the film. To make our horror remember we will need to make sure our zombie subgenre is not a horror unless we intend to make it a horror. Then the subgenre will need to be scary and not funny. |
From the 2000s to modern day zombie films are finally getting better and the future is looking bright for them. The best movies that have been made in the 2000s are land of the dead, dawn of the dead and shaun of the dead. in 2013 a man called man called Marc Forster created a new type of zombies and they are more deadly then ever and there are more zombies then ever. This film is called world war z. with main star Brad Pitt fighting for survival and trying to find a cure to save the human race. getting big stars like this upped the ratings massively and it was in the top 25 films of the year.
Our Zombie subgenre will be successful as there are not many Zombie films out there which are sold to the target audience. There are many classic zombie horror films e.g night of living dead (1968) , Dead and Buried (1981), The Evil Dead (1982), Day of the dead(1985), Night of the Creeps (1986), Evil dead 2(1987). But they were not really well advertised and not remembered. We need to create a zombie sub genre which relates to our target audience ideas and interests. So they will watch the subgenre and make it successful.
